Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) has today unveiled its £9bn transformation plans for the iconic London building which will be re-opened as a retail, leisure, office and housing destination in 2020.

The main body of the building will be divided into two Turbine Halls (A and B), which will house an array of "carefully curated brands" from around the world in just over 100 units.

Turbine Hall A was built in the 1930s and reflects the Art Deco style of the era. It will be home the to the Premium Collection of brands that "portray elegance, sophistication and timeless style". Turbine Hall B was completed in the 1950s and has a sparser aesthetic; this area will be home to younger, more contemporary brands.

When completed, Battersea Power Station will be the third largest retail destination in Central London, comparable in scope to Oxford Street, and is expected to attract 40m visitors a year. It will be served by MBNA Thames Clippers which will deliver visitors to the door of the Power Station while the Northern Line is being extended to give the site its own Zone 1 tube station.

Simon Murphy, Deputy CEO and CFO of Battersea Power Station Development Company, said: “The retail offering here will form a key part of a new London destination we are creating at Battersea Power Station. Locals and those from across Britain and the world will be coming here for all sorts of reasons, including being able to go into one of the world’s most recognisable buildings."

As well as the retail offer Battersea Power Station will also feature a number of bars and restaurants in Circus West Village along with an events space, The Village Hall, and a park. One of the building's towers will feature a glass elevator enabling visitors to take in 360-degree views of the capital. Apple has already pre-let 500,000 sq ft of office space.

Sam Cotton, Retail Leasing Director at Battersea Power Station Development Company, said: “We are creating something very special here that will stand alone in the retail world. We will be giving consumers access to both well-known brands, who will be offering something different to what they have elsewhere, as well as great start-ups from Britain and around the world.

“The response we have already had from businesses has been incredible and as we are handpicking every single retailer, this is going to be a fantastic place for both retailers and consumers. We are scouring the globe, not only for the best retailers but also looking at how we can provide a platform for the wider evolution of retail,” Cotton added.
