NET-A-PORTER pledges PORTER will be plastic free as it partners with Parley for the Oceans

NET-A-PORTER has pledged to make its PORTER magazine global subscriptions plastic free by 2019 as it announces a partnership with Parley for the Oceans – a global collaboration network pioneering a new approach to environmentalism – to "celebrate the oceans and highlight their fragility and the catastrophic effects of plastic pollution".

The luxury etailer's magazine's Summer Escape issue features a 63-page ocean portfolio, shot exclusively in the Maldives – where the team also took part in a beach clean-up with the community – by acclaimed photographer Mario Sorrenti, in collaboration with eco-warrior, supermodel and guest editor, Anja Rubik and Parley for the Oceans.

Sorrenti’s images show "the stark reality and vast impact of plastic pollution", while the editorial delves into how we can all become more responsible, rethink our standards and embrace eco-innovation. “Do you know every second breath we take comes from the oceans?” Rubik told the publication. "The fashion community can drive the movement – we can create trends,” she added.

"Content + Commerce + Cause collides three worlds to impact change. This issue is dedicated to our beautiful seas and protecting our oceans. From the moment Parley first presented to our editorial team, each of us has been inspired to make changes to our own lives and PORTER is proud to make a commitment to an ongoing process of reducing and recycling plastic in our workplace and practices. Using our editorial platform to highlight this cause and engage the powerful medium of fashion is a milestone in protecting our oceans,” said editor in chief Lucy Yeomans.

In addition to the dedicated editorial PORTER will continue to support the partnership with a two-month campaign across both Porter.com and all social channels – asking readers to get involved by taking the Parley AIR pledge to reduce plastic use and protect the life source that is our oceans, and highlighting ways they can affect change.

Furthermore customers are now able to purchase Adidas x Parley sneakers and Clean Waves eyewear – all made with Ocean Plastic® by Parley (Parley’s material created from plastic waste intercepted on beaches and in coastal communities) at NET-A-PORTER.

“Change doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process, and once people have made the commitment we are there to help them realize it,” said Parley founder Cyrill Gutsch. As part of its pledge PORTER's Summer Escape subscriber issues will be delivered in paper envelopes and the title has made a commitment to be plastic-free across its global subscriptions by 2019.

The partnership will climax on the eve of World Ocean Day on 7 June, when Lucy Yeomans, Cyrill Gutsch, Anja Rubik and Mario Sorrenti will co-host an exclusive Incredible Oceans Gala in New York, set against the backdrop of the East River, with guest of honour, the legendary oceanographer Sylvia Earle.
