SS16 in numbers: WGSN on the key styles set to dominate next season

Trend forecaster WGSN has been diligently analysing the percentage increase and decrease of several key items on the catwalks of New York, London, Milan and Paris this past fashion month and, based on this data, has made its predictions of the winners for SS16.

Dresses
Dresses have taken this year’s fashion weeks by storm as the main focal point in both London and New York so far. Dresses could be seen everywhere and showcased a variety of features including: ruffles, floral patterns, and a variety of hemlines.

In London dresses with ruffles have increased by 62% from 8% in SS15 to 13% in SS16, floral dresses show a huge increase of 164% from 6% to 15% and asymmetric skirts increased by 16% going from 18% to 21% of the mix.

The Maxi dress holds 22% of total dresses, which is a 25% increase from SS15. This increase has led to a decrease in mini/above the knee dresses from 47% to 38%. Although mini dresses have decreased, they still hold a majority of the overall category distribution.

In New York the percentage of dresses within the overall assortment has increased by 19% from 26% in SS15 to 30% in SS16, showing an overall slowdown in separates with skirts decreasing by 17%, from 13% in SS15 to 11% in SS16.

Milan continued to confirm the key trends seen in New York and London shows. The dress was a focal point in Milan this season with the sweater dress increasing by 12% from SS15 Catwalks, representing 24% of the mix.

Wide leg trouser
Another key piece in Milan included the wide leg trouser, which also represented 40% of the trousers proportion, a 53% increase from SS15. Ruffles were seen again, this time on the blouse, which increased by 100%, from 3% to 6%.

Paris closed fashion week season picking up on the wide leg trouser highlighted in Milan. Wide leg trousers increased by 33% within the overall trousers proportion, shifting from 25% in SS15 to 33% in SS16.

In Paris we also saw that within the wide leg trouser category, 28% were cropped, compared to 20% in SS15, a 40% increase in total - this is consistent with what we’ve been seeing in the other cities, confirming that the wide leg trouser will be another must-have item for SS16.
