Trailer released for latest Vogue documentary

Lauretta Roberts
23 February 2016

The official trailer has just been released for latest documentary to go behind the scenes at US Vogue. First Monday in May follows Editor in Chief Anna Wintour and the teams at Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art as they prepare for the launch of last year’s sell-out exhibition, China: Through the Looking Glass.

The "Met Ball" is staged on the first Monday in May every year and tickets to the event are among the most highly coveted in fashion. Guests at last year's event included Kanye West, Kim Kardashian West, Beyoncé, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore and Rihanna to name a few. In the film former Vogue staffer André Leon-Talley dubs it "the Superbowl of fashion social events".

A number of industry names make cameos in the film including Karl Lagerfeld and Jean-Paul Gaultier who discuss whether fashion is an art form. Wintour seems to think so, the trailer closes with her proclaiming "fashion should be recognised when it touches people and moves people; I mean what more can you ask of art?"

First Monday in May is the third major documentary to go behind the scenes at Wintour's Vogue. The first was RJ Cutler's acclaimed The September Issue, which told the tale of the largest ever edition (at that point) of Vogue,  published in September 2009. This was the film that made a star of Grace Coddington, the former creative director of Vogue who recently stood down (she will however continue to direct occasional shoots for the magazine).

There then followed in 2012 In Vogue: The Editor's Eye, which celebrated the role of Vogue's current and former fashion editors. The latest film will open the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on 13 April.

2016 will be a vintage year for fashion films. Earlier this year it was revealed that Alexander McQueen would be the subject of a new biopic and that Manolo Blahnik would be featured in a new documentary. In addition the hotly anticipated follow up to Zoolander has just been released and Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie will be out this summer featuring a host of industry figures making cameos.

Earlier this month, the cast was revealed for a new TV series called The Collection, which will be screened on Amazon Prime and which is set in a couture house in post-war Paris.
